The names of the Peristeri districts reflect the origin or professions of those who settled there at different times (Armenian refugees, flower merchants and army officers). The area has been built in an anarchic way with low-quality amenities and there are continuous efforts toward urban regeneration. Peristeri is characterised by the plethora of small businesses and has got a sizeable immigrant population.
Peristeri is home to the Boxing Hall which hosted the Olympic boxing event in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. The area is served by three Metro stations, Agios Antonios, Peristeri and Anthoupolis.
